Beef and Broccoli stir fry is a family favorite dinner. The tender beef paired with the sweet stir fry sauce served alongside rice is a comforting dinner and there are rarely leftovers.

I made this Beef and Broccoli stir fry with coconut aminos because I don’t eat soy sauce. I know a lot of people don’t eat soy sauce because of either allergies or health reasons, so this is a great alternative for a lot of people.

What Is Coconut Aminos?

Coconut aminos is a sauce made from fermenting the sap of the coconut palm with sea salt. Coconut aminos do not taste like soy sauce, it is a savory-sweet sauce that can be used in place of soy sauce, but without the rich, umami, or savory saltness of soy sauce.

Because Coconut Aminos is so sweet, it is a good idea to use less than you would if you were using soy sauce. I also like to add red crushed pepper flakes and extra salt to help take the sweetness down, since coconut aminos is not salty at all.

Toasted Sesame Oil

The toasted sesame oil really helps to add the Asian flavor to this dish, since we are not using soy sauce.

How to Make Beef and Broccoli

Start by making the stir fry sauce. In a large mixing bowl add the minced garlic, ground ginger, black pepper, red pepper flakes, coconut aminos, cornstarch, toasted sesame oil, and hot water. Whisk until combined, then set aside.

Next, thinly slice the beef against the grain. The grain is the natural direction of the beef. You want to slice against it so that the meat is not tough and chewy.

Fry the meat in a hot cast-iron skillet with a few tablespoons of ghee. Cook until browned on both sides, then set aside. Repeat until all the meat is cooked.

Once the meat is cooked, return it to the pan and add the stir fry sauce. Allow the meat to cook in the sauce for 5 minutes until the sauce starts to thicken. Then add the broccoli and cook until tender.
