Why This Recipe is So Good

  • What are blood oranges? This is an orange variety known for its beautiful intense ruby red colored flesh. They are sweeter than regular oranges with a slight tang.
  • This blood orange mocktail with ginger beer is a refreshingly sweet non-alcoholic drink perfect for the holidays, seasonal brunches, kids or Dry January.
  • Winter mocktails are where it’s at. Between a Cranberry Ginger Mocktail made with cranberry juice or an orange mocktail, these winter mocktail recipes celebrate the very best of the winter season. And whether you are trying to cut back on alcohol or simply looking for a festive and bubbly, family-friendly drink, homemade mocktails always hit the spot.

Blood Orange Mocktail Ingredients

Blood oranges – This gorgeous orange variety is sweeter and more brightly colored than a regular oranges.

Ginger beer – Ginger beer doesn’t contain any alcohol. It has a stronger, “spicer” ginger flavor than ginger ale. I also find it to be less sweet than ginger ale, which is perfect for this recipe since we are combining it with blood orange juice.

Garnishes – fresh or dried orange slices and fresh rosemary sprigs

Orange sugar rim – this optional too. It’s done by zesting the blood orange, mixing it with granulated sugar, rubbing the orange half around the rim of the cup then dipping the rim into the sugar until coated.

How to Make a Blood Orange Ginger Mocktail

All ingredients, measurements, and instructions are in the recipe card at the bottom of this post.

Make an orange sugar rim

Zest ¼ of a cleaned blood orange using a microplane. Mix the zest on a plate with 1 tablespoon of sugar using the tips of your fingers to mix until the sugar is “wet” and fragrant.

Cut the orange in half then run the rim of your short glass around the orange then dip the rim of your cup in the orange sugar until it’s coated. Set aside.

Make a blood orange mocktail

Juice a blood orange either by squeezing by hand or using a citrus juicer if you are making a lot of mocktails. (I found using a juicer easier to get all the juice out)

Fill your sugar-rimmed glass with ice then pour over blood orange juice then top off with ginger beer.
