Why This Recipe is So Good

  • This is a non alcoholic blood orange lemonade recipe. It’s made with freshly squeezed blood orange juice, lemon juice, water, and cane sugar. It’s sweet, slightly tangy, and very refreshing. • Blood oranges are generally in season from December to April/May, and they can be found in most grocery stores. If you get a chance to grab these beautiful oranges it will definitely elevate your lemonade in the very best way. If they’re not in season, you can easily swap them out for cara cara oranges; they are sweeter than regular oranges, so your lemonade will have a similar flavor.

Recipe Ingredients

Blood oranges – This orange variety is known for its beautiful, intense ruby red colored flesh. They are sweeter than regular oranges with just a slight tang.

Lemons – About 1 cup of freshly squeezed lemon juice or about 5 – 6 large lemons. Freshly squeezed lemon juice is truly the best. Use a citrus juicer to make this process quicker.

Cane sugar – Just a little bit of sugar to sweeten this orange lemonade. You can also replace it with honey for a natural sweetener alternative.

How to Make Blood Orange Lemonade

All ingredients, measurements, and instructions are in the recipe card at the bottom of this post.

Dissolve sugar in warm water or make a simple syrup

In a pitcher, stir sugar with 1 cup of warm water until dissolved, then pour in the remaining 3 cups of cold water. Set aside. I find it easier to stir sugar into warm water until it dissolves and add cold water rather than making a simple syrup.

Juice blood oranges and lemons then make lemonade

Juice blood oranges and lemons using a citrus juicer. You can strain the juice using a fine mesh strainer to remove any pulp if you like, then pour both the blood orange juice and lemon juice into the pitcher with the sugar water. Stir, then chill or serve immediately over ice.
