  • Organic matcha powder – I used ceremonial-grade matcha powder. It is smooth and grassy but in a good way! It’s best to use a high quality matcha powder because it won’t taste bitter.
  • Cane sugaryou can use maple syrup, a touch of honey, or the sweetener of your choice instead.
  • Cold milk – Use your favorite oat milk, I love the Califia Farms Oat Barista Blend because it’s very creamy. If you aren’t dairy free use regular dairy milk instead.
  • Warm water – To mix with matcha powder.
  • Ice cubes – used for serving.

Matcha is made by grinding green tea leaves into a fine powder. In order to achieve that bright green color, the leaves are shaded from the sun right before they are harvested to increase their chlorophyll content producing that vibrant color.

Grades of Matcha

The key to the perfect iced matcha latte is using good-quality matcha powder. There are two types of matcha powder to look out for – culinary grade matcha and ceremonial grade matcha.

Culinary has a dull almost brownish-green color. It has a slightly bitter and very earthy flavor. This grade is used mostly for cooking and baking. Culinary favorites: Natives Organics, Camel

How to Make an Iced Oat Milk Matcha Latte

  1. In a small bowl combine matcha powder with warm water. Whisk with either a bamboo whisk in an “M” motion or using a milk frother until smooth and frothy. I like to whisk the matcha with a bit of warm water to help avoid lumps.
  2. Add in the cane sugar then whisk until dissolved. 
  3. Fill a pint-sized mason jar with ice.
  4. Pour the matcha mixture into the glass.
  5. Add oat milk or milk of choice. Stir and enjoy!

Ingredients

  • 1 – 1 ½ teaspoons Matcha powder ceremonial grade
  • 3 tablespoons warm water
  • 1 ½ teaspoon cane sugar or to taste
  • 6 ounces oat milk cold and unsweetened or your milk of choice
  • Ice for serving

Instructions 

  • In a small bowl add matcha powder and warm water. Using a bamboo whisk in an “M” pattern or electric milk frother whisk until combined and frothy. 
  • Add in sugar and whisk until dissolved. 
  • Fill a pint-sized mason jar or cup with ice, pour over milk then your prepared matcha mixture.

Notes

Storage and make-ahead tips

  • You can make this homemade matcha latte up to 24 hours ahead of time. Make the recipe like usual then add the ice when you are ready to serve it.

Tips and variations

  • The easiest way to ensure you don’t have any clumps of matcha powder in your drink is to whisk it with a little bit of warm water. The temperature should be between 110 degrees Fahrenheit. If it’s too hot it can affect the taste of the matcha.
  • If you are using sweetened milk omit the sugar from this recipe.
  • Feel free to add 1/4 teaspoon of pure vanilla extract for a different flavor.
  • The amount of sweetener used is totally up to personal preference. This tea latte is lightly sweetened so feel free to add more sugar if you like!
