  • They are pretty simple to make at home. You don’t need any fancy equipment, simply a high-speed blender and fine mesh sieve, a piece of cheesecloth, or a nut milk bag. 
  • Cheap (and better for you!) alternative to store-bought ginger shots – Not only are these homemade turmeric shots cheaper than buying them from the grocery store or health food store but since we are making them at home they will be extra potent and flavor-packed. They are super fresh and yields way more juice for the cost of a single store-bought juice shot. 

Recipe Ingredients

  • Turmeric – Fresh turmeric can be hard to find in some grocery stores. If you don’t have it, it’s totally fine to substitute with ½ – 1 teaspoon of ground turmeric instead. 
  • Ginger – Use fresh ginger, you don’t have to peel it since we are straining the juice later.
  • Black pepper – is believed to increase the benefits of the turmeric. You just need a pinch!
  • Water – Just enough to blend all the ingredients together. 
  • Oranges – Optional. Include a Cara Cara or Naval orange to balance out the spiciness of the ginger and the tanginess of the lemon. 

How to Make Ginger Turmeric Shots without a Juicer

All ingredients, measurements, and instructions are in the recipe card at the bottom of this post.

  1. Add the ingredients to a blender. 
  2. Blend until smooth. I have this blender, and I used the “Extract” setting. Otherwise just blend on high speed until smooth.
  3. Strain through a fine-mesh sieve. Or use a cheesecloth or nut milk bag. Note: fresh or ground turmeric will stain your hands, nut milk bag and blender. 

Variations

  • Add extra black pepper or cayenne pepper for an extra spicy kick. 
  • Add 1 small orange or 1 – 2 tablespoons of raw honey since these ginger shots are quite spicy.
  • Add a few cloves of raw garlic.

What if I don’t have a high-speed blender?

Add more water if needed and cut the turmeric and ginger into smaller pieces so your blender doesn’t have to work as hard to break them down. Also choose fresh plump pieces of ginger and turmeric, it will be juicer and break down easier. 

Do I have to make shots?

No, not at all! You can add as much water or coconut water or orange juice(or fresh oranges) as you like and make it into a juice or wellness drink. 

How much ginger do you put in a shot?

This is up to personal preference and depends on how strong you want the ginger flavor to be. I added 4 ounces of fresh ginger root to the recipe, which is about 2 medium-ish chunks of ginger root or 1 heaping ½ cup of ginger cut into 1-2 inch pieces. These shots have a pretty strong ginger flavor so feel free to use half of the amount of ginger called for. 

Can you use ground ginger or turmeric?

I wouldn’t recommend using ground ginger since it doesn’t have the same potency and flavor as fresh. However, since fresh turmeric can be hard to find in stores it would be fine to use, it will give a slightly different flavor than fresh.

Ingredients

  • 4 ounces fresh ginger root cut into 1- 2 inch pieces, (peeling optional) or a heaping ½ cup chopped
  • 2 ounces fresh turmeric root cut into 1 – 2 inches pieces, peeling optional
  • 2 large lemons peeling optional
  • teaspoon black pepper freshly ground, helps turmeric absorb better
  • ½ cup water

Optional

  • ¼ teaspoon extra virgin olive oil helps the turmeric absorb better
  • 1- 2 small Naval oranges Cara Cara oranges or Blood Oranges for sweetness
  • ¼ cup fresh pineapple cut into cubes, for sweetness
  • 1 – 2 tablespoons raw honey for sweetness

Instructions 

  • Note: fresh turmeric can stain your hands and your blender. These ginger shots are pretty spicy so feel free to add 1 – 2 oranges, honey or use less ginger if you want it less zesty and tangy.
  • Add all the ingredients to a high-speed blender. Blend until smooth.
  • Set a fine mesh strainer over a bowl lined with a piece of cheesecloth or nut milk bag. Pour over the ginger shot mixture pressing out as much liquid as possible. Alternatively, you can leave the pulp in your shot if you want to keep the additional fiber.
  • Discard the pulp or save it to add to smoothies.
  • Pour the ginger turmeric shots into air-tight glass storage jars.
  • Enjoy 1 – 2 ounces as a shot. Dilute if you wish.

Yields: 1 cup of juice or 5 (1.5-ounce) shots

How To Store/ Make Ahead

  • Store for 3-5 days in the refrigerator in an air-tight container. The longer the shots sit in the refrigerator, the more they will lose their potency.
  • Freezer-friendly: You can store them in the freezer for a few weeks. Just keep in mind that the longer the juice sits the more it will lose it’s potency and some of the benefits of having fresh juice. 

Tips and Tricks

  • Keep the pulp or freeze it to add to smoothies or make it into a tea.
  • Use a spoon to peel the ginger. It’s so much easier than using a vegetable peeler or a knife.
  • It might be easier to use a fine mesh strainer exclusively than using cheesecloth.
