This healthier green tea frappuccino is made with milk, cream, ceremonial-grade matcha powder, sugar and ice. It doesn’t contain any artificial colors or ingredients and it’s totally customizable to you!

A frappuccino without coffee has always been my go-to drink at coffee shops. It’s rich and smooth, creamy and refreshing and ever so delicious. This recipe is a healthier version of Starbucks’s Green Tea Frappuccino, it’s less sweet and it doesn’t contain natural flavors, xanthan gum or any other additives. If you want to make it refined sugar-free swap out the granulated sugar for honey or maple syrup. 

It’s a guilt-free refreshing drink perfect for matcha lovers.

  • Matcha powder – Ceremonial-grade matcha powder is perfect for this recipe because it has an earthy and bright flavor. Culinary-grade matcha is ideal for baking because it can have a grassy and slightly bitter flavor. 
  • Milk and cream – This gives the matcha frappe a rich and creamy consistency. I like to add a bit of heavy cream to make the drink even more luxurious.
  • Sweetener – Starbucks uses vanilla syrup to sweeten the frappuccino but I opted for granulated sugar and a touch of vanilla extract. 
  • Ice – It gives the frappuccino a milkshake consistency. 

What is matcha?

Matcha is young green tea leaves that were shaded, picked, dried then ground to a fine powder. The vibrant green color is achieved by shading the plants before picking them.

For lattes, frappes, or matcha teas its best to use ceremonial grade matcha. This is the highest grade of matcha, it has a brighter color and smooth flavor. Matcha Love is one of my favorite matchas to use because it’s not only pretty affordable but it has a strong green tea flavor without tasting bitter. 

Culinary-grade matcha, on the other hand, has a duller green color and it can have a bitter and grassy taste. This type of matcha is best used for cooking and baking.

How to Make a Matcha Frappuccino

  1. Add your ice, milk, cream, sugar, and matcha powder to a blender.
  2. Blend until smooth then pour into a glass topped with whipped cream.

Tips and Tricks

  • Add the ice on the bottom of the blender so all the ingredients don’t get stuck at the bottom and have a hard time blending. 
  • Top with whipped cream, sweetened cold foam, or stabilized whipped cream for a more luxurious at-home coffee shop experience.
  • Make sure to use high-quality matcha powder. This drink is made with a good amount of matcha powder so make sure it’s ceremonial grade for the best flavor. 
  • Use a high-speed blender. I love this high-speed blender, it blends up the ice perfectly.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup ice
  • ¾ cup milk or the milk of your choice
  • ¼ cup heavy cream or dairy-free cream
  • 1 ½ – 2 tablespoons granulated sugar or to taste
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract or vanilla bean paste
