Why This Recipe is So Good
Adding mushroom powder to hot drinks like hot chocolate is a great way to enjoy the amazing benefits of adaptogenic mushrooms in a delicious way. Mushroom powder has a subtle flavor that isn’t very noticeable in your drinks, so it’s a great way to sneak them into your diet.
It’s made with 4 ingredients – cacao powder, mushroom powder, cane sugar, and a tiny bit of salt. This homemade mushroom hot chocolate mix is also dairy-free and doesn’t contain any powdered milk. It’s perfectly sweet, takes just a couple of minutes to make, and yields 1 ½ cups of hot chocolate mix.
This homemade mushroom hot chocolate mix makes a rich, delicious, and relaxing cup of hot chocolate. I love keeping it on hand for stressful days or when I just want a relaxing drink before bed.
Mushroom Hot Chocolate Mix Ingredients

- Cacao powder – I used cacao powder. It’s made by minimally processing cacao beans so it has a rich and strong chocolate flavor. Most hot chocolate mixes are made with Dutch-processed cocoa powder. It has a smoother and milder taste, but it has been processed a bit more. Either way, use unsweetened chocolate powder so we can control the sweetness of our hot chocolate mix.
- Mushroom powder – This blend includes reishi, chaga, cordyceps, lion’s mane, and turkey tail. There are many different types of mushroom powders you can purchase. I used a 5-mushroom blend, but 7- and 10-mushroom blends are available as well. Sometimes mushroom powers have an intense flavor, so I recommend starting with a little bit of mushrooms, then adding more to your taste. The one I used doesn’t have much of a flavor at all.
- Sugar – Cane sugar or white granulated sugar is used to sweeten this mushroom hot chocolate mix. Powdered sugar contains anti-caking agents that give an “off” taste to your drink. Regular sugar will dissolve just fine when combined with hot water or hot milk.
- Salt – Just a bit to help balance out and enhance the sweetness of this hot chocolate mix.

Notes
How To Store/ Make Ahead
Store hot chocolate mix in an airtight container in a cool environment. Can be kept for 3- 6 months, but for maximum freshness, use within 3 – 4 weeks of making. If it ever looks off or has an off smell, discard.Tips and Tricks
- Cacao powder or Dutch-processed cocoa powder? Cacao powder is raw, minimally processed cacao beans. It has a deep and intense earthy chocolate flavor with a slightly bitter taste. Cocoa powder or Dutch-processed cocoa powder is more processed with a milder chocolate flavor. Either one works fine for this recipe.
- If you want a sweeter hot chocolate mix, use ¾ cup of sugar and ½ teaspoon of salt to help balance out the sweetness of the sugar.
- Sugar. I would avoid using powdered sugar to sweeten this hot chocolate mix because it often contains anti-caking agents like cornstarch, which can give it an “off” taste. Simply using cane sugar or white granulated sugar is perfectly fine and will dissolve when combined with hot water or milk.
- Mushroom powder. Some mushroom powders have more intense mushroom flavors than others. I used a 4 to 1 mushroom extract powder for this recipe and it doesn’t have much of flavor at all. I have also made with this recipe using a 7 mushroom blend and it has a more more intense flavor, and I use ½ the amount of mushrooms as a result. Start with a little bit of the mushroom powder, then add more according to your taste.
