Recipe Ingredients

  • Milk and cream – Give a rich and creamy ice cream consistency without the need for cream cheese.
  • Sweet potato – I used a baked sweet potato or you can use canned sweet potato puree.
  • Spices – To give a classic sweet potato pie flavor, ground cinnamon, ground nutmeg, allspice, and cloves are added to the ice cream base along with vanilla bean paste.
  • Brown sugar – Adds a rich caramel flavor and sweetness.

All ingredients, measurements, and instructions are in the recipe card at the bottom of this post.

  1. In a medium mixing bowl stir together brown sugar, sweet potato puree, and spices.
  2. Next, stir in heavy cream and milk until combined. The mixture will be chunky, but it’s ok because everything will get blended by your Ninja Creami ice cream machine later.
  3. Pour your ice cream base into a pint container then top with a lid. Freeze on a level surface for at least 22 – 24 hours.
  4. Remove the lid, place the pint inside the Ninja Creami outer container then insert it into the machine.
  5. Press the ICE CREAM button then allow it to run through the cycle.
  6. Scoop and enjoy!

Frequently Asked Questions  —

Is sweet potato good in ice cream?

Absolutely! Sweet potato might seem like a weird addition to ice cream but trust me it works! The spices and brown sugar really help to bring out the warm flavors of sweet potato pie and the ice cream base is smooth and creamy. Together it’s such a delicious fall treat!

What kind of sweet potato should I use?

Any sweet potato used to make sweet potato pie or candied yams is fine to use. Beauregard, Covington, Jewel or Red Garnet varieties are great choices because they are very sweet and moist. Drier sweet potatoes like ones with tan or cream-colored flesh or purple sweet potatoes are less sweet and won’t give your ice cream the same sweet potato pie flavor.

What to do with leftover sweet potato?

Use your leftover canned or baked sweet potato to make Sweet Potato Overnight Oats or Sweet Potato Cornbread.

Notes

How To Store/ Make Ahead

  • Make ahead: If you’re planning on making your ice cream far in advance, it’s best to store it unblended(it has been processed in the ninja creami yet). Blended ice cream if it sits in the freezer for too long can start to taste like the freezer or become freezer burnt.
  • Frozen unblended ice cream can be stored for up to 3 months.
  • Frozen blended ice cream stored for 1 – 2 months.
  • Leftover ice cream: You can respin it if you want a soft serve consistency to your ice cream after it has been blended and frozen again. I only like to do this if more than half of the pint is still available.

Tips and Tricks

  • Combine the spices with the sugar first: You can use a blender if you like, but I prefer to mix everything together in a mixing bowl. Mix sugar with the spices before stirring in the milk and cream otherwise, it’s harder to whisk in the spices because they tend to float on top of the milk instead of mixing in.
  • Blender: If you want to mix everything in a blender instead of the bowl, you can. Just make sure to only blend the ice cream mixture for 10 – 15 seconds. You don’t want to overmix the cream and turn it into butter.
  • Sweet potato: Baked sweet potato or a canned sweet potato puree.
