Hi! I’m Tonya, and welcome to The Midwest Kitchen Blog! I have been blogging for a while so I thought it would be nice to do an introduction.

First, I want to tell you why I started this blog, and then I want to give you five facts about me!

Why I Started This Blog

I started cooking when I was 8 years old. My mom helped to teach me the basics about cooking and allowed me and my sister the opportunity to learn and experiment in the kitchen. Both my parents have been really supportive of all my food ideas. As I started to get better at cooking they would always say “ You should take a picture of this dish!” or “ You could start a restaurant or you can sell that dish!” I thought it was funny when they said this, but at the time I didn’t realize that my food was actually good. Over time I realized that I could start a blog and share some of the recipes that my family has come to love and to enjoy.

Food From Scratch

One of the main reasons I have continued to cook and experiment is because I get really sick when I eat prepared foods and junk foods. Many times I would eat restaurant food or junk food and I would get either a really bad headache, be sick all night, be lethargic, or just got really moody after eating.

My mom has been into nutrition and healthy eating for many many years, so I knew it was the poor quality food that was giving me these problems. When I cooked my own food using organic and whole ingredients these problems didn’t occur. Almost every ingredient I use is either organic or non-GMO, rare cases will I use something that is not. I cook almost everything from scratch because 1. I like to cook and experiment in the kitchen and 2. I feel better when I use organic and whole ingredients.

I don’t restrict anything in my cooking (except pork and shellfish), because I believe that eating healthy doesn’t have to mean cutting out food groups. Instead, I believe that a healthy lifestyle should include the foods you enjoy in moderation.

Through this blog, I want to show people in their twenties(my age group!) that they can make healthy food from scratch that tastes amazing. Many people my age don’t know how to cook, and instead, they rely on restaurants and prepared foods. However, cooking your own food saves you money and time, it is really doable and is a great skill to have!

Now five facts me!

1. I can code a website from scratch!

2. I am the third out of four children. I have an older brother and sister, and a younger sister.

3. I was homeschooled for most of my life with my younger sister and loved it!

4. I was born in the Midwest and I just recently moved back with my family. However, I spent most of my life in the great State of Texas!

5. I love to paint in Watercolor and I sell some of my artwork in my Etsy shop!

That’s it, I hoped you learned a little bit more about why I started this blog and about me! Now, what are five facts about you? Let me know in the comments!
